Trivia and History

Services opened 1992
KFC and BP sold to EG Group and SGN Retail 2021
Forecourt sold to MFG 2023

Plans for a service area here emerged in 1991, with a petrol station, car wash, restaurant and hotel proposed. A BP filling station was built and opened in 1992 by local business owners H A Malek & Partners. They later added a Wimpy restaurant in 1994.

It then took over 10 years for the planned hotel to finally emerge with a Travelodge hotel opening in 2006. The Wimpy restaurant was converted into a KFC Drive Thru in 2007.

The local business owners also owned a Wimpy franchise in the centre of Barnstaple and used billboards located around the filling station to promote it.

The Subway store here used to be open 24 hours for a time. There is still some signage visible around the site now inaccurately advertising this.

Sale

H A Malek & Partners sold their businesses here on 26 March 2021, with the forecourt being acquired by SGN Retail and the KFC restaurant being acquired by EG Group. Following the takeover, SGN rebranded the SPAR store to Nisa Local and added a number of new grab and go options. A Revolution Laundry machine was also added to the forecourt.

The forecourt was acquired by MFG in February 2023, under a deal with the Competition and Markets Authority. The Nisa Local store was de-branded in March 2023, reopening on 31 March as a Budgens store. The Revolution Laundry machine was also removed as part of the acquisition.

MFG now intend to add a Greggs pod here by re-aligning the car wash bays and removing the jet wash bays at the back of the site. They also intend to add eight MFG EV Power electric vehicle charging bays to the forecourt too.
