Planned and Cancelled Motorway Services
In addition to the projects listed below, there are a number of service areas in the early stages of development. Those with specific locations have their own pages, while others are just listed here:
- Athenry (Oranmore) (M6/M17/M18)
- Dunshaughlin (M3)
- Ennis (Newmarket-on-Fergus) (M18, now looks unlikely)
- Foynes (N69)
- Rathcoole (M7)
Some service areas are planned for motorways that are themselves in the early stages of development, so the locations are even more vague. We know that, if these motorways are built, there will be service areas at:
- M11: Wexford
- M28: Ringaskiddy
The Irish planning system makes a distinction between 'type 1' (full services) and 'type 2' (rest areas), but as of yet no type 2 sites have been formally proposed. Those listed so far are all of the 'online' ('official') type, whereas there are a few more 'offline' ('private'/'unofficial') sites in the pipeline:
- Dunshaughlin (M3)
- Ennis (M18)
- Mullinavat (M9)
The following services were planned, but those plans now appear to have been formally cancelled. You can also download the list on Google Earth. Those listed below, which appear to have been officially abandoned, are all of the offline type.
- Castleblayney (M1)
- Dromin Plaza (M1)
- Dunboyne (M3)
- Jigginstown (M7)
- Maudlins (M7 - former Cemex site)
