Trivia and History
Like most Irish motorway service areas, the building is a combined dining area and forecourt sales shop. This is one of the more elaborate examples, with a dedicated entrance for using in the car park, leading to a row of food units. There is then a large dining area by the forecourt sales shop.
To help it blend in, the building has grey stone-effect walls on the outside, and wood-effect on the inside. Despite its rural location, it can get surprisingly busy inside, perhaps because of the broad range of food available. The building is surrounded by roads on all sides, but has a landscaped picnic area, and green fields on all sides.
The shower block is provided in a second building by the lorry parking. A small coach interchange was added in 2021. Branded 'Paulstown smart stop', it is in fact a regular TFI bus stop, used by JJ Kavanagh intercity coaches. Parking restrictions mean it can't be used as a park and ride stop.
The service area opened in 2016. The food units were Burger King, Chopstix Noodle Bar, Subway and The Bakewell, with a Costa lounge on the other side. Costa became Applegreen's Braeburn in late 2023.
Four Applegreen Electric charging points were opened in 2023. Planning permission was held to build eight high-speed electric vehicle charging points with a canopy at the back of the car park, part-funded by a grant.
Following their partnership with M&S Food, their range was added to the shop from 24 September 2024.
