Trivia and History
Planning permission for the service area was sought by Birdhill Motorway Developments Ltd in 2008, for what they called Lough Derg Gateway service area. They put the land up for sale, with a large billboard on the land advertising the opportunity to buy a service area.
Applegreen purchased the land and built the facility in 2014. In the same year, the National Roads Authority announced that they would likely build a rest area near M7 J27, where the service area was soon developed.
In August 2019, to tackle concerns caused by COVID-19, Applegreen placed a container in the car park and turned it into a drive thru coffee shop. They considered building a permanent drive thru coffee shop on the spare land to the west of the site in January 2022, but this plan was dropped. They also wanted to build 14 ESB ecar charging points. Applegreen secured a new grant to build a high-speed electric vehicle charging hub here in 2024; eight new charging points, powered by renewable energy, were proposed in February 2025.
Following the partnership between Applegreen and M&S Food, their range was added to the shop on 23 April 2024. The Costa lounge became Braeburn later that year.
