In 1987, several local authorities created a joint policy for service areas on the A1-M1 Link Road. This recommended building a service area here at Thrapston, and Forte soon proposed one.

The service area opened in June 1991, before the new road was finished. Little ChefHistory and Travelodge opened first, with a Shell forecourt (operated directly by them) opening shortly after.

The restaurant gained a Coffee Stop, which became a Burger King franchise.

Little Chef was taken over Euro Garages in 2017. The restaurant lasted until January 2018 when the new owners' rights to the name expired. The signs were taken down and the restaurant continued as EG Diner. Keeping it this long was unlikely to be a deliberate decision, but the result of problems converting it to a Starbucks.

The EG Diner permanently closed in August 2018, leaving behind the Burger King, which closed two weeks later. The main building reopened in Autumn 2018 with Greggs and Subway replacing the EG Diner and the Burger King reopening after refurbishment. A Sainsbury's On the Go store then joined the site in May 2019.

Following the Coronavirus lockdown in 2020, the Sainsbury's On the Go store permanently closed. The Subway store closed at the same time, which was thought to be permanent, but the store reopened on 3 May 2022 with Subway's new 'Fresh Forward' look.

A housing development was recently added directly behind the service area, with deliveries to the site being accessed through the complex. This access has since been closed off.

Two 175kW Shell Recharge electric vehicle charging points were installed here in Spring 2021, as part of the forecourt refurbishment. These were expected to go live during late 2021, but this has been delayed due to power supply difficulties.
