Trivia and History

This service area was a typical restaurant and filling station set-up. A commercial yard is also accessed through the services which is now home to Britalba, who had truck wash facilities.

A northbound counterpart was proposed by BP throughout the 1990s, but this was never built.

Planning and Opening

Following the opening of the A33 Swallowfield Bypass in 1980, several plans were put forward during the 1980s to develop a southbound service area on the new bypass. The first came from Shell in 1989 for a forecourt and restaurant. Following several refusals, Scotfield Ltd. and Esso were granted permission for a filling station and restaurant in 1992 however the site was later opened by Spanish energy company Repsol in late 1993.

The restaurant building was home to 'M's Family Diner'. This closed in 2009 and became Carriages Car Wash CafĂŠ for a year before being put up to let. The restaurant was later purchased by the former owners of the restaurant in 2014 who turned the site into a motor repair garage and van rental yard called 'M's Building Supplies'. The site was later sold to Sydenhams Building Supplies in 2022.

The filling station has been branded BP since the early 2000s. In 2013, the filling station was acquired by MRH who added their Hursts store to the site. The site was later acquired by MFG in 2018 following the merger of the two companies.

MFG redeveloped the forecourt in 2021 with the sales building, car wash and jet wash demolished and a new, larger sales building built in its place with official customer parking and two new jet wash bays. The site reopened on 7 October 2021 and features a Londis store with integrated Greggs store and a number of grab and go options. MFG also hold planning permission to add two new MFG EV Power electric vehicle charging bays here.
