Trivia and History

A hotel building made out of grey stone, with signs saying Travelodge.
The buildings are all cladded in mock-local stone.

There was a building called Prizet View to the west of the A6 (now A591), built after the road was straightened out in the 1930s. This gained a petrol station in the 1960s.

The road was upgraded to a dual carriageway in the 1970s which saw a new southbound petrol station open opposite the existing one. The two have operated as a pair of BP filling stations since. Part of the old alignment of the A6 still forms part of the northbound petrol station.

Little Chef owners Granada added a restaurant next to the southbound petrol station in 1998, and later added a northbound Travelodge hotel in 2005. The Little Chef closed in the same year and became The Energy Centre, now a flooring company.

The filling stations later rebranded to Shell in 2015, where they also each gained a Mace store.

Expansion

AUK Ltd submitted plans to build a Costa Drive Thru with 8 electric vehicle charging bays on the northbound side in 2020 but were refused permission on the basis that the development was not needed in such a rural location. The plans were then re-submitted before being rejected again in January 2021.

MFG acquired the filling stations in December 2020 following the purchase of six sites (including these two) from AUK Investments Limited. As part of this, MFG rebranded the shops from Mace to Londis.

MFG sold the southbound forecourt to Platinum Retail in May 2023, to placate the Competition and Markets Authority. They rebranded the site to BP, with the Londis store rebranding to SPAR. MFG added an extension to the sales building in June 2022, with the intention to add a Greggs to the site, but this space has now become additional storage space as the new owners do not hold a franchise with Greggs.

MFG are now seeking planning permission to redevelop their northbound filling station, relocating the sales building to the back of the site. The new sales building will feature a new food to go offering whilst the forecourt will feature eight pumps, six new MFG EV Power electric vehicle charging bays and a new jet wash.
