Trivia and History

A Shell forecourt, with a SPAR branded shop and a Subaru car dealership attached.
The Shell forecourt, attached to the Subaru car dealership.

Both facilities have been here for a long time - even the forecourt dates back to the 1930s. The hotel was called Rest-a-While, and then The Pear Tree.

The road layout in this area is complicated because the A38 used to run right through the middle of the site, which was called Castle Bridge, but the road was straightened in the 1940s and then bypassed completely in the 1970s.

The hotel and restaurant were once the main facilities here, and were known at the time as Dartmoor Motel services. The hotel car park housed a former toilet block.

The forecourt is now operated by Ashburton Motor Works, who have their workshops and car dealership situated behind. The shop here was branded Mace for a while.

Work commenced in early 2023 on transforming the outdoor seating area at the hotel, adding a new outdoor kitchen and terrace seating area comprising of two former shipping containers. The new facilities are expected to open in July 2023. The former toilet block was converted into a storage building during the works.

The site of the Buckfastleigh branch of Little Chef sits just south of here, also on the original alignment of the A38. The site has recently been turned into an electric vehicle charging hub by Osprey, with the former Little Chef building expected to reopen as a cafĂŠ and farm shop in summer 2023.
