Trivia and History

The A24's 1960s bypass of Horsham included a roundabout on the edge of Broadbridge Heath. Here was Kingfisher House, a grand-looking building which had extensions, outbuildings and conservatories, where it acted as a car showroom and garage. It was branded Fishers Garage, and later City Garage.

By the 1990s, that garage had become a Shell forecourt. It was an unusual building with a diamond-shaped sales shop that formed part of the canopy, and had tall windows along every wall. A mast on the ceiling held the canopy. A Happy Eater restaurant was built in the other corner, next to the new Broadbridge Way, with a more typical brick building with a small roof. This opened in June 1983, allowing the site to be classed as a full service area, with signs placed on the A24.

That Happy Eater became a Little Chef in 1997. This traded until 2007, when it closed and was converted into another car showroom. The haphazard showroom arrangement remained for several years, until all of the buildings were demolished and replaced with a single, contemporary, multi-brand car showroom building in around 2014. The road signs began to be taken down, though many remained.

The next change was to the forecourt, which was demolished and replaced with a typical Shell Select sales shop and forecourt layout in 2018. The new shop included a Budgens store.

The opening of the Broadbridge Heath Relief Road in 2015 meant that all traffic heading for the forecourt to or from the A24 south now had to pass through the High Wood Hill Junction in addition to the Farthings Hill Roundabout, a diversion which passes a large supermarket. Despite this, new signs for the service area were placed on the A24.
