Trivia and History

Restaurant building with a flat roof and flagpoles outside, and a sign saying Kelly's Kitchen.
The southbound Kelly's Kitchen, next to Fina.

A pair of petrol stations were built on the A38 in around the 1960s, next to Bell Bridge. The southbound one was known as Bell Bridge Garage.

In early 1987, Kelly's Kitchen opened their first branch next to a new Fina petrol station, built next to the southbound carriageway opposite Fradley Lane. This first design was slightly unusual, with a smaller building and a chimney facing away from traffic. A play area was included.

A second branch opened next to the existing northbound petrol station on 28 March 1987, which became a Fina. That restaurant cost £450,000 to develop, and held a balloon race to promote its opening day in an event attended by radio presenter Henry Kelly. People named Kelly were told to write to the local newspaper for a prize.

One of the restaurants - it's not clear which - suffered serious flooding in August 1987.

Rebranding

The two Kelly's Kitchen restaurants became Little Chefs in September 1990. The southbound Little Chef closed in 1992, and is now used by rail safety training group Amtrain. The northbound Little Chef lasted until around 2005 - it became Christos Restaurant and Bar, and then in 2012 became Pulse & Cocktails Adult Superstore.

The two Fina forecourts became Total, operated by MPK Garages. These became Shell in 2012. Shell refer to the two as 'Fradley North' and 'Fradley South', referring to their direction. Confusingly the 'north' branch is the further south of the two and is in fact south of Fradley.

Bell Bridge Garage closed in the 1990s, and became a hand car wash.

Demotion and Return

The northbound service area had a road sign denoting its official status. This was removed in late 2015.

A brand new road sign was placed in the same position in August 2018. Both signs claimed that the facilities are not available overnight, although Shell advertises 24 hour opening.
