Trivia and Design

Dodwells is arguably the southbound partner to Hinckley, which is positioned a mile to the south and signed for northbound traffic. Both forecourts are accessible to traffic on both sides of the road. Thanks to a very strange post code boundary, the two both have the exact same post code.

Two properties are accessed from the service area. There is also a footpath joining it to a nearby supermarket.

History

A Greggs store in its own modular building.

Dodwells Garage dates back to at least the early 1920s when the site sold fuel alongside housing a tent showroom and clothing store. The site later became a car sales showroom and garage like many others, with the site gaining an Esso-branded forecourt in 1986.

By 1998, the site was owned by Freeway Petroleum Ltd, who were operating the site on a lease from the Dodwell family under the BP brand. The site received a major redevelopment and reopened in late August 1999, with new pumps, canopy and forecourt shop all being added. The original proposals also included a car wash for the site, but comments from local residents caused Freeway to amend their plans.

The BP forecourt later gained a Londis store in 2010 before being sold to Applegreen in 2013. The site now uses their economy brand, 'Low Fuel Prices Always'.

Applegreen added a Greggs store to the site in 2022, which opened on 3 November. The store is situated in its own modular building at the back of the forecourt and was built in just eight weeks.
