Trivia and History

Pizza Hut restaurant with a tall building.
Pizza Hut is the only restaurant option which is officially attached to the service area.

Shell refer to this service area as Fengate, while some sources call it Margram. Confusingly, some even call it 'Peterborough services'. However the road signs quite clearly call it 'Boongate services'.

The forecourt and restaurant were both first planned in the late 1980s by Margram and Chicken George respectively and is positioned on the former site of Peterborough abattoir. During the planning stages, Margram had planned to brand the filling station as their own however upon opening it was branded Total alongside the Chicken George restaurant which included a drive-thru lane. That Chicken George restaurant was short-lived and in 1991 Pizza Hut bought the building and turned the restaurant into one of their pizzerias.

The filling station went on to be branded Q8 in 1993, who added a car wash to the site. This became Pace in the mid-2000s, and BP in 2007. Shell purchased the forecourt in 2011 and added their Select store; they now operate the site.

Shell intend to redevelop their forecourt here, removing the redundant car and jet washes and building a larger sales building in their place at the back of the site. The redeveloped forecourt is also set to include seven Shell Recharge EV charging bays. The plans are currently awaiting a decision.
