Trivia and History
The land here was originally used as part of the Eastfield Industrial Estate. Following the dualling of the A92 through Glenrothes, the land closest to the Bankhead roundabout was rezoned for use as a service area with the land being broken up into a number of plots. The site became known as Bankhead Park.
A number of proposals were put forward by Scot Sheridan Developments for the plots of land with the first coming in 2001 for a filling station and a drive-thru restaurant and another in 2003 for a 3-storey 50-bed hotel. These facilities were eventually built and opened in 2005 as a BP forecourt and a Travelodge hotel. The forecourt went onto gain M&S Simply Food branding in 2007.
A stand-alone restaurant was also built opposite the filling station and opened around the same time. This was originally home to Wok'n Spice and later became Beijing Banquet in the mid-2010s.
A separate proposal for an additional restaurant and a KFC Drive Thru to the rear of the forecourt were put forward shortly after the forecourt and hotel had opened in 2005 but these were refused planning permission. In 2018, McDonald's proposed plans for a drive-thru restaurant on the same land and this was approved with the drive-thru restaurant opening on 19 June 2019.
Major Expansion
BP currently hold planning permission to add two BP Pulse electric vehicle charging points to their forecourt. Meanwhile, Bluewater are seeking to build a Popeyes drive-thru, a Costa Coffee drive-thru, and an electric vehicle charging hub on vacant land at the back of the service area, with additional space left for an extra development; they are pursuing this as of 2023 following an earlier delay.
EG Group sought planning permission to develop a full service area on the vacant land nearest the roundabout in June 2023. This land, which was cleared in 2017 after Pico Electronics left it some years earlier. A number of drive thru operators raised an interest, with Fife Council keen to see the land developed.
If built, EG Group would operate their own forecourt, a drive-thru coffee shop, a drive-thru restaurant, 29 car parking spaces, 2 HGV bays, 2 coach bays, 1 abnormal load bay and 22 electric vehicle charging points. It would be a rare example of an official service area complex appearing to have two rival fuel filling stations.
