Trivia and History
The garage dates back to at least the 1940s, forming part of Lower Sinsharnie on the Old Military Road. The garage was later sold to new owners in 1962, who were selling Esso fuels at the site by 1966.
The filling station was joined by the Ashgrove Restaurant in 1979. This was joined by a garden centre in 2006, by which time the site was trading under Gleaner branding. The restaurant and garden centre closed in the mid-2010s, with the restaurant building later being demolished.
Planning permission has since been granted in August 2023 for a new Ashgrove Restaurant and Truck Stop to be built on the site of the former restaurant and garden centre. The new facilities are set to feature a new cafĂŠ with 14 dedicated car parking spaces and 5 new dedicated HGV parking bays. The new amenity building will also feature a 24-hour toilet and shower block.
